From adoring the god of Nigerian music Fela and the desire to be just as great as him, Dremo is fast carving a niche for himself and getting fans to realize the enormous talent that lies within him.
Signed by Davido alongside Mayorkun as the flagship acts for his record label DMW, the Nigerian rapper, producer and songwriter known for his unique blend of hip-hop and Afro beat sounds has grown in leaps and bounds and is among those heralding new school rap in Nigeria at present.
In his breakout single aptly titled ‘Fela’ the rapper payed tribute to one of the greatest icons and face of Nigerian Afro-beat music Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, known professionally as Fela Kuti, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, or simply Fela. Describing the lifestyle of the iconic late musician with exciting punchlines and catchy hooks, the single a cover of ‘Panda’ by American rapper Desiigner tell tales of the glamorous and sometimes overly flamboyant lifestyle of Fela, Dremo twists his words weaving them in a way the listener is drawn to appreciate the legend’s greatness.
In the first verse he raps “Fela ti pada wa, i want to light up the shawarma. Two chains on, no shirts on nigga says cheese to the camera. Two hands up in the air, like say you get yawa with olopa. please don’t try to interfere, when am getting cake like its 15th of October. Ani’kula’po, Kuti!… Ani’kula’po, Kuti! everyday na like my birthday, talkin’bout the government na my duty. Fornication and adultery, omo na big sin that’s why you see me getting married to any kind of shawdy wey i give D!”. With such lines the rapper describes the defiant nature of the political maverick and his amorous attitude towards his huge flock of women.
From his first single under DMW the rapper has stolen the minds of young urban Nigerians with his follow-up singles ranging from Ojere, 1_2 bang featuring label boss Davido and others helping to cement his status as one to watch out for.
A different kind of musician from the music maestro, the young rapper portrays the sort of defiance and courageous outlook Fela was known for. Most artistes point to Fela as a source of inspiration for their music but very few embodies what the music great stands for as much as Dremo who breathes the same boldness and musical sauciness and poise as the legend. The name of his first record label A.P.P.E – Absolute Passion Powers Everything is the perfect acronym definition to describe Dremo’s attitude, motivation and dedication towards his Art.
Fela Anikulapo Kuti left the game as a multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afro-beat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick and the stage is poised for Dremo to follow the footsteps of the very man he idolizes.
